Know Your Skin: Bulk Billed Skin Checks in Upper Coomera

Noticed a spot that looks a little different lately, or realised you cannot actually remember your last skin check? You are not alone. Skin checks are one of those appointments that are easy to put off, especially when nothing feels urgent. At Doctors @ Coomera Central in Upper Coomera, our skin doctors make it simple to get a thorough check, with bulk billing available for eligible patients and appointments open seven days a week.

Why Skin Checks Matter

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and around two in three Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer by the age of 70. Most skin cancers are linked to sun exposure. The encouraging part is that when skin cancer is found early, it can often be treated effectively, which is exactly why regular skin checks are worthwhile, not something to worry about.

What Happens During Your Skin Check

Our GPs take the time to assess your skin carefully and guide you on next steps if anything needs attention. A skin check at our clinic may include:

  •       Reviewing your medical and skin history
  •       A detailed, full-skin examination
  •       Using a dermoscope to closely assess any areas of concern
  •       A recommendation for biopsy, such as shave, punch or excision, if it is clinically needed

If a biopsy is performed, your results are explained clearly, whether the finding is benign or requires further treatment, and any next steps are talked through with you.

When It Might Be Time to Book

It is worth booking a skin check if you notice a new or changing mole, a spot that is growing or changing shape, irregular borders, changes in colour, or any area that is raised, rough, itchy, bleeding or not healing. If you cannot remember when you last had a check, that is a good enough reason on its own to book one.

Treatment and Minor Procedures, On-Site

Where treatment is needed, our procedural GPs can manage many skin matters on-site, including curettage and cautery, cryotherapy, simple excision, and flap or graft surgery where appropriate. Our doctors also perform minor surgery for lumps, cysts, lipomas and other growths on the head, neck, face and limbs.

Skin Cancer Detection and Diagnosis

Our skin doctors take a detailed history and examine any suspicious lesions with a dermoscope, a handheld tool that allows a much closer look at the surface and structure of a spot than the naked eye alone. Where a lesion needs further investigation, our GPs can perform a shave, punch or excision biopsy on-site to help diagnose the type of lesion. In every case, whether the result is benign or requires further treatment, your GP will sit down with you and explain the histopathology results clearly, along with any next steps.

Who Should Consider a Skin Check

Anyone can develop skin cancer, but some patients carry a higher risk, including people with fair skin, a history of sunburn, a family history of skin cancer, or significant sun exposure over their lifetime, whether from outdoor work, sport or simply growing up in Queensland. If you fall into one of these groups, or if you cannot recall your last check, it is worth making skin checks a regular part of your healthcare routine, alongside things like blood pressure checks or dental visits.

Skin checks are also valuable for people who spend a lot of time outdoors for work or hobbies, from tradespeople to weekend gardeners and sports enthusiasts. Building sun-safe habits, such as broad-brimmed hats, SPF50+ sunscreen and seeking shade in the middle of the day, works alongside regular checks to support your long-term skin health. Even people who are careful in the sun can benefit from a baseline check, simply so any future changes to a mole or freckle are easier to notice.

Ongoing Monitoring and Follow-Up

Skin health is an ongoing process rather than a one-off appointment. We provide follow-up consultations after any procedure, ongoing monitoring where needed, and reminders for routine skin checks, particularly for patients at higher risk. Our skin checks are provided by GPs with a special interest and training in skin cancer medicine, including Dr Gregory Campbell, Dr Marlene Kong and Dr Yuan Zhao.

Bulk Billing and Booking

Where clinically appropriate, skin checks and follow-up consultations may be bulk billed for eligible patients, and some procedures may involve a fee, which our reception team can talk you through before your appointment. You will find us at Shop 2/21 Coomera Grand Drive, Upper Coomera, next to ALDI, with ground-floor, wheelchair-accessible rooms and on-site parking. We are open 7 days a week from 8:00am to 5:00pm, and same-day appointments may be available if you would rather not wait once you have noticed something worth checking.

Because we are open every day, including weekends, fitting a skin check into a busy week does not have to mean taking time off work. Many of our patients book a check alongside another appointment, such as a chronic disease review or a repeat prescription, to make the most of a single visit to our Upper Coomera clinic.

If it has been more than twelve months since your last skin check, or if you are simply not sure when you last had one, our reception team can help you find a suitable appointment time. A skin check is a straightforward, low-fuss appointment that fits comfortably into a normal day, and taking the time to book one is one of the more practical steps you can take for your long-term skin health.

Managing an ongoing health condition as well? Our Chronic Disease Management service can help coordinate your broader care. For independent information on skin cancer awareness and prevention, visit Cancer Council Australia.
