What an STI Check Involves
A sexual health check usually starts with a private chat with your doctor about your history and any symptoms or concerns. Depending on your situation, testing may involve a urine sample, a blood test, or self-collected or doctor-collected swabs. Your doctor will explain what is recommended for you. A typical check is quick and straightforward, often taking around 15 to 30 minutes.
What We Can Test For
We can arrange testing for common sexually transmitted infections, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV, and discuss other infections where relevant. Many STIs have no symptoms, so testing is the only way to know for sure. Your doctor will recommend the tests that are appropriate for you.

When to Get Tested
It is generally recommended to have a sexual health check at least once a year if you are sexually active, and more often if you have new or multiple partners, have had unprotected sex, or notice any symptoms. If you are starting a new relationship, getting tested together can give you both peace of mind.
Results and Treatment
Your doctor will let you know how and when you will receive your results. If anything needs treatment, many STIs are easily treated, and your GP will talk you through the options and any follow-up, including advice on letting partners know where appropriate. Everything is handled confidentially and with care.

Contraception and Sexual Health Advice
Sexual health is about more than testing. Our GPs can also help with contraception and family planning, HPV vaccination, and advice on HIV prevention and safer sex. See our Women’s Health and Immunisation Clinic pages for related services.
