Why Skin Checks Matter

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Around two in three Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer by the age of 70, and most skin cancers are linked to sun exposure. The good news is that when skin cancer is found early, it can often be treated effectively, which is why regular skin checks are so valuable.

Skin Cancer Detection and Diagnosis

Our skin doctors take a detailed history, examine suspicious lesions with a dermoscope, and perform shave or punch biopsies to help diagnose the type of lesion. For larger lesions, an excision biopsy may be performed. In every case, the histopathology results are discussed with you, whether the finding is benign or malignant.

What Happens During Your Skin Check

At Doctors @ Coomera Central, we offer thorough skin checks for patients of all ages. Our GPs take the time to assess your skin carefully and guide you on the next steps if anything needs attention. It is worth booking a skin check if you notice a new or changing mole, a spot that is growing or changing shape, irregular borders, changes in colour, or any area that is raised, rough, itchy, bleeding or not healing.

Your skin check may include:

  • Reviewing your medical and skin history
  • A detailed, full-skin examination
  • Using a dermoscope to closely assess any suspicious areas
  • Recommending a biopsy (shave, punch or excision) if it is clinically needed

If a biopsy is performed, we will explain the results clearly and talk through any next steps with you.

SKIN CANCER TREATMENT

Skin Cancer Treatment and Minor Surgery

Where treatment is needed, our procedural GPs can manage many skin cancer matters on-site. Procedures may include curettage and cautery, cryotherapy, simple excision, flap surgery, graft surgery and margin-control surgery. Our GPs also perform minor surgery for lumps, cysts, lipomas and other growths on the head, neck, face and limbs, where appropriate.

Ongoing care is an important part of looking after your skin. We provide follow-up consultations after any skin procedure or treatment, ongoing monitoring where needed, and reminders for routine skin checks, particularly for patients at higher risk.
